Artist Spotlight: Jon Wong

I found Jon Wong's work through Design Work Life, and I was impressed with his creative use of shapes and colors. I wanted to share some of his projects today. His Monomyth project makes great use of those interesting shapes and colors I notice in all his work. If you read the description, you'll see that the colors were carefully chosen (but note that there's one bad word in one of the portfolio images).

I love the way the shapes and colors overlap. It makes the design look three dimensional and quite interesting.

The cover in particular has a 70's and 80's retro color scheme and overall look. I think the typography Jon chose really supports that style.

I really like Jon's re-brand for Hoyle, too. It has a very elegant, upscale style and color scheme, but it still uses shapes in a fun, creative way. Isn't this typography lovely?

This maze-like pattern is a lot of fun. I love the succession of many different patterns along with the simple type.

The black, white, and gold is a very elegant color scheme, and I like the subtlety of this page: shapes and letterpress type.

His Exploradonia project is fun as well. I love the bright colors and cool illustrations. Basic shapes aren't as prominent in this design, but the illustration style is still cool and funky like his more shape-oriented designs.

I like the way the pages of this book are colorful and bright, but how white space is still a prominent feature and the layouts aren't too busy or overstimulating.

The type (I think it's Gotham) is simple and easy to read, which is a good counterpart to the fairly detailed illustrations.

I really like the style and skill of Jon Wong's work. What do you think of it?
