Maricor/Maricar Embroidery
I really love the embroidery work by Maricor/Maricar, twin sisters who do graphic design, illustration, and other creative things. What stands out to me most from their portfolio is their embroidery. It is not just cute-little-sampler kind of embroidery. It is fun, modern, cool, design-y embroidery. Some of their projects are absolutely remarkable because of the detail. Here's a faraway view of a project called Gusto Gusto. It's neat, right? Great colors and typography and texture.
But then look at the detail photo. See all those many stitches? Wow.
Here's another piece I like, one that Maricor/Maricar designed for ESPN magazine (of all publications!). It's called Go Play, and I love the typography in it. It's interesting how the fun, busy pattern is housed in a clean, simple sans serif typeface.
Another thing I like about Maricor/Maricar's work is the fact that even their simpler, less colorful pieces are creative. Here are two more calm ones that still have an interesting style. I love the swirling, curving type of Tongue Tied & Hopeless. It looks very delicate, but not too frilly because of the black on ivory color scheme.
Another neat piece is this one, Echo. It's made entirely out of denim, and what I think the precision and symmetry of the circles is excellent. I also like the subtle contrast in the piece even though it's only one material.
This embroidery is an example of a neat concept in design: handmade and hands-on work. I think it's important not to forget that sometimes it's good to step away from the computer and do art (even using graphic design elements like typography!) away from the technology of computers. I'm very grateful for computers, but I think sometimes it's easy to forget that there's any other way to do design. I like the way Maricor/Maricar takes advantage of lots of avenues for art.
What do you think of their embroidery work? I'd love to know what your opinions are!

"Go Play" reminds me of a sweater!
For some reason, the "Echo" one reminds me of ripples in water. :)
