Pantone: The Stuff

To be perfectly honest with you, I don't 100% understand what Pantone is and does. I know that it's an "authority on color" and that it publishes chips and color codes to use in graphic design. And I know it has some cool products and is a significant part of design folklore.

So I like Pantone. So much that I'm going to do a little mini-series on it! Today I'm going to feature some fun products from the Pantone site, tomorrow I'm going to show you something really cool that's a surprise, and Thursday I'll talk about Pantone's color of the year.

The first thing I want to show you today are these Pantone chips. They are insanely expensive ($259—why?), but they are so cool! If I understand it correctly, they can be used to pick colors in graphic design, but they're also just really neat looking. The design of the packaging is amazing (which is understandable).

But in addition to resources on color for designers (like the chips), Pantone also has lots of fun projects that reflect their style, and in many cases, look like the chips. Here's a collage of a few of those.

What do you think of these Pantone items? Do you have a favorite? And don't forget to look for more Pantone fun tomorrow.
